Located in the heart of Florence, Grand Hotel Minerva is a sophisticated blend of rich history and modern ingenuity. First opened in 1869, this iconic hotel has undergone several transformations, each one adding layers of artistry, innovation, and refinement. The most significant renovation occurred in 1958 when visionary Venetian architects Carlos Scarpa and Edoardo Detti were entrusted with reimagining the space. Scarpa, renowned for his innovative post-modern sensibility combined with Japanese influence, elevated the hotel with his cutting-edge design and thoughtful reconnection of the various elements that would eventually form a truly pioneering 101-room hotel.

Before becoming a hotel, the building was part of the Cathedral of Santa Maria Novella during the medieval period, further enriching its storied past. Its prime location in the heart of Florence’s Piazza Santa Maria Novella gives me breathtaking views of some of the city’s most iconic landmarks. From the hotel rooms, I can hear an enchanting opera singer echo throughout the piazza. At the same time, I admire the grandeur of the Santa Maria Novella church, a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, as well as glimpses of the Duomo and Palazzo Vecchio, both of which add to the unparalleled charm and allure of my setting. This exceptional location allows me to experience Florence from a truly enviable vantage point.

In 2018, the Florentine family who acquired the property completed another extensive renovation, blending the hotel’s historic grandeur with modern comforts, while honoring the architectural vision set forth by Scarpa.

Architecture: A Masterclass in Stone and Space

Scarpa’s design was ahead of its time. One of his most remarkable contributions was the introduction of a rooftop terrace with a swimming pool—an innovation that drew the attention of American visitors in the late 1960s. The fusion of modern style with timeless elegance made Hotel Minerva a must-see destination for me, not only for its luxurious accommodations but also for its groundbreaking approach to hotel design.

Carlos Scarpa’s architectural genius is evident in the hotel’s exterior and interior design. He famously cut stone in a distinct way, crafting edges and corners that created a bold yet refined sense of depth. His use of bricks—each meticulously pointed—was a signature style that further enhanced the spatial dynamics, giving the hotel an air of lightness and sophistication. The wood and stone-cut staircases serve as a tribute to Scarpa’s craftsmanship and remain one of the hotel’s most striking features.

Interior Design: A Sensory Journey Through Time

The interior of Hotel Minerva is a sensory experience that welcomes me into a world where history meets contemporary chic. Upon entering the lobby, I am enveloped in the subtle scent of grapes—a nod to the Tuscan vineyards that surround the city. The space is dominated by dark wood and leather, with textured walls that create an intimate and luxurious atmosphere. Gilded furniture and intricate details add an element of opulence, while pops of coral red in the chairs and walls bring a modern vibrancy to the space.

One of the lobby’s most captivating features and my personal favorite is the iconic “Bathing Women” sculpture, one of only six in existence, which captures a moment of feminine grace and strength. Artwork from the Florentine family’s personal collection adorns the walls, providing a visual connection to the region’s rich cultural heritage. This combination of 1800s design, 1960s influence, and modern Italian furniture, fabrics, and leathers creates a dynamic fusion of past and present.

In the glass hallway, artwork depicting cultural and historical significance speaks to the hotel’s deep ties to Florence’s artistic legacy. The Carrera marble checkered pattern of the breakfast room adds another layer of beauty, paying homage to the architectural traditions of Italy.

 Hospitality: A Warm Welcome

The Grand Hotel Minerva in Florence offers a level of hospitality that is truly exceptional, where every guest is treated with the utmost care and warmth. The hotel’s commitment to excellence becomes immediately apparent when you step through its doors. The staff, attentive yet unobtrusive, go above and beyond to ensure every need is met, whether it’s offering personalized recommendations for exploring the city or providing thoughtful touches to make your stay unforgettable. The detailed walkthrough of the hotel’s legacy is a testament to its long-standing dedication to hospitality. Each room, each service, and each detail reflects the hotel’s deep-rooted passion for creating unforgettable experiences, making every guest feel like part of a gracious tradition that spans over a century. It is a place where history, comfort, and personal care come together to create a truly remarkable stay.

Dining: A Novel Experience

I indulge in a lavish buffet of Tuscan delicacies and homemade pastries, including a dedicated vegan corner, all within an interior design masterpiece originally crafted by Carlo Scarpa in 1958. The room is bathed in natural light, thanks to a sweeping glass wall that opens to Scarpa’s serene Japanese garden, while the fresh blue and green color palettes reflect a sense of tranquility and vitality. Works of art by Giuseppe Chiari grace the walls, adding an artistic touch as I begin my day, enveloped by the finest Italian craftsmanship and design.

The hotel’s restaurant, aptly named La Buena Novella (The Good Novel), reflects the elegance and tradition of the hotel itself. The dining space features a rich color palette of cherry reds and dark woods, complemented by off-white sketch figure drawings that line the walls, creating a refined yet inviting ambiance. Here, guests can indulge in expertly crafted meals while enjoying an atmosphere steeped in the cultural history of Florence.

Leading the culinary vision is the young and talented Chef Edoardo Papiani. Known for his vibrant and imaginative approach to Tuscan cuisine, Chef Papiani creates dishes that are as visually stunning as they are delicious. His menus are a feast for the senses, bursting with color and flavor, and showcasing the freshest local ingredients. Each plate is a work of art, combining traditional flavors with a modern twist, and presenting them in ways that highlight their natural beauty. Chef Papiani’s unique creations reflect the same innovative spirit that defines the hotel, making each dining experience a memorable journey through both taste and design.

From its medieval origins to the innovative transformations of the 20th century, Hotel Minerva is a celebration of Florence’s rich heritage, modern architectural ingenuity, and timeless elegance. Every detail, from the scent in the air to the carefully curated artwork, invites guests to experience the city in a way that is both deeply rooted in history and elegantly forward-thinking. Whether you’re visiting for a night or a lifetime, Hotel Minerva offers an experience that is as captivating as the city itself.
