Checking In: SO/ Paris

In Paris, the Eiffel Tower is something of a North Star. Its familiar silhouette is a constant, orienting point glimpsed from streets, cafés, and, if you’re lucky, from the window of your hotel room. At SO/ Paris, that view lies at the heart of the stay—and it’s only one of its defining elements.

Perched along the Seine in L’Arsenal, a quieter pocket near the Marais, SO/ Paris has quickly emerged as one of the city’s fresher fixtures on the hospitality scene. The location offers a different rhythm from the frenetic energy of central Paris, with a more residential, relaxed spirit that still feels distinctly Parisian, from its café-lined streets to its riverfront promenades. Rising high above the Right Bank, the hotel offers sweeping sightlines across the city—including an unmitigated view of the Eiffel Tower—as the Seine and other landmarks unfold below.

Paris has never been short on storied hotels, from grand dames to intimate Left Bank institutions, making its hospitality milieu feel inseparable from the culture of the city itself. Holding its own among this glittering crowd, SO/ Paris takes a decidedly contemporary approach to that legacy, with an identity shaped around the people, artists, and creative sensibilities that make Paris Paris. The swift concierge service—who, by the way, are outfitted in Breton stripes designed by Patou Creative Director Guillaume Henry—and thoughtful touches found throughout the property are simply the cherry on top.

Perhaps one of the most distinctive Parisian-isms felt in the hotel is its fashion-forward point of view. Throughout SO/ Paris, fashion, art, and architecture are part of the language, with design studio RDAI lending the interiors a playful, retro-futurist aesthetic that feels distinctly removed from what one might typically expect of a five-star hotel in the French capital. As you step into the lobby, terrazzo floors, soaring ceilings, and sculptural mushroom-shaped columns immediately set a more whimsical, almost larger-than-life tone. 

Contemporary art, including a vibrant tondo by French-Algerian artist Neïl Beloufa, amber-toned mirrored walls, and subtle nods to Paris further the sense of place. Elsewhere, eclectic decor, art books, and magazines fill the entry booths and café corner, inspiring you to linger—and after a welcome refreshment from the staff, you’re more than ready to stay awhile.

And that’s only the permanent landscape—during my stay earlier this summer, a cheeky installation—starring mannequin cameos of muses Jane Birkin and Paris Hilton—by designer Maison J. Simone brought a playful wink to the experience, tapping into the irreverent streak that so often sits beneath the city’s venerated air of refinement.

There’s also a roster of collaborations designed to bridge the gap between “tourist” and “local,” something that can be difficult to navigate when you’re not from the city. Whether it’s a direct line to La Samaritaine, one of the city’s oldest and most iconic department stores, or a collaboration with Ryvdoll, whose street-inspired magnetic paper dolls are rendered in an exclusive SO/ set, SO/ Paris offers a way into the little secrets and gems that locals know best.

Still, it’s unmistakably a globally minded hotel. Inside the rooms, the fanciful spirit found in the lobby carries through in warm tones, vivid patterns, and a particularly playful bulldog-shaped speaker, but the comfort of the king-size bed is a welcome reminder that you’re here to rest, too. The burgundy-tiled ensuite bathrooms are stocked with—you guessed it—French skincare by Codage, the Parisian brand that also operates the hotel’s beautiful spa.

While Paris has much to offer all hours of the day, you don’t have to leave the hotel. Bonnie, the hotel’s rooftop restaurant and bar by Paris Society hospitality group, offers libations and atmosphere in equal measure. Its moniker nods to the cinematic Brigitte Bardot and Serge Gainsbourg duet of the same name, and the sleek, ’60s-inflected interiors in both spaces are fitted with chrome, mirrors, and a particularly inviting candy-pink Fumoir room that encourages all kinds of European vices. However, the star of the show might just have to be the 360-degree views, with an outdoor balcony wrapping around the space.

On the menus, expect French classics with an American-inspired spin, from foie gras to popcorn chicken. The cocktails are equally creative, with a game-themed menu organized by different levels depending on the kind of game you want to play (with your sobriety). Still, the views make for sufficient nourishment. By day, it makes for an especially dreamy breakfast; by night, it shifts into more of a see-and-be-seen setting, drawing a chic Parisian crowd alongside hotel guests for its many DJ nights. It’d also make for a fitting finale to your stay.

The fantasy of Paris tends to be contested. A city is only a city, after all, and whatever romance we project onto it is often met with the harsher edges of reality. Still, for some, that romance remains alive and well, and is one of the reasons we return again and again. At SO/ Paris, that fantasy feels all the more grounded, with a hotel curated not only to experience the city, but to be a part of it. You can spend the day wandering through art museums, linger over a streetside glass of wine, or follow the Seine until the sun goes down, knowing there’s a spectacular view waiting when you return.
