The Copenhagen Edit

Words: Gabriella Onessimo
In Denmark, where half the year unfolds beneath a muted grey sky, there’s a word for that palpable, abstract warmth: hygge. Like the most evocative phrases, it resists direct translation, but at its core, it speaks to a quiet sense of comfort and the intimacy of life’s simpler moments.

Perhaps it’s the invisible force of hygge that made me feel so comforted in the five days spent in Copenhagen. While the sun hardly poked through the clouds, the cozy interiors and inspired design enshrouded us in a different kind of warmth.
Copenhagen is known for its design-forward approach to living, where aesthetics and utility exist in quiet alignment. The Danes intrinsically underscore its value, treating design as something as vital as functionality rather than separate from it. Both move hand in hand, in close synchronicity, shaping everything from interiors to everyday objects and its emerging fashion vanguard (which we covered during the Fall/Winter ’26 season). It’s a philosophy that reveals itself in restraint, where even the smallest details feel deeply considered.

Traced from the charming canals of Nyhavn to the bold pulse of the Meatpacking District, discover Copenhagen through the TEETH lens in our guide, entailing where to eat, shop, stay, and move through the city where design and experience are inseparable.
TO STAY: AUDO HOUSE

Part hotel, part concept space, Nordhavn staple Audo House feels like stepping into a fully realized interior world.
Designed in collaboration with Menu, the rooms are spare yet deeply tactile. Think soft textiles, sculptural lighting, and warm, muted tones that embody Copenhagen’s knack for restraint. It’s less about traditional luxury and more about immersion, where every detail is intentional, every corner composed.

Situated above a statue-lined café and curated interior gallery, the rooms line a quiet hallway, still marked by whispers of design in the form of art hangings and sleek chairs. Entering the room immediately offered a pause: dim lighting, exposed wood ceilings, and a sprawling queen bed that anchored the space. The angle of the roof created an almost cocoon-like sanctuary, and as I stepped back in from the grey, the room felt like home.

Additional contenders: Coco Hotel (chic boutique spot), Hotel Sanders (refined yet contemporary), Petra Hotel (imagined as a home away from home).
TO BITE: ALLE TIDERS & LA CABRA

Warm, unfussy, and deeply intentional, Alle Tiders captures the ease of Copenhagen dining at its best. The menu leans seasonal and ingredient-driven, with traditional breakfast spreads and simple dishes that are comforting and still expansive. It’s the kind of place where the atmosphere—bright windows, natural materials, a gentle hum of conversation—lingers just as much as the food itself.

Coffee shops are a cornerstone of Copenhagen mornings, each one a sanctuary-like space for expertly baked breads (with interiors to match). Enter La Cabra, a global café house that approaches coffee with the same rigor and clarity that defines Danish design. The interiors are pared back, with details that truly frame the space, like the Nordhavn location’s stunning red tile bar. Even still, the croissants hold their own.

Also worth a shoutout: Atelier September (laid-back neighborhood cafe), De la Finca (light-filled brunch spot), Juno (best cardamom bun).
TO DINE: ESSE

Copenhagen is known for its high concentration of Michelin-starred restaurants and bold eateries that push the dining conversation forward. One of its newcomers, ESSE, marks a compelling addition to the scene from Matthew Orlando. The Californian chef returns to Copenhagen after years in Southeast Asia, bringing a renewed focus on circular cuisine shaped by reflection and global experience. His approach continues to center sustainability, now more embedded in the cooking itself, drawing from his time at cuisine heavyweights Amass, Noma, and AIR in Singapore.

Nestled in a reworked warehouse, the food is ingredient-led and precise, built around a tasting format that weaves a transportive story with each bite, with the latest menu encapsulating all aspects of a fish in its many forms. Each dish focuses on technique and seasonality, with minimal excess, so intention and flavor remain the clear throughline of the meal. It’s one of those meals that stays embedded in your brain.
For the foodies: AOC (creative take on fine dining), Restaurant Vie (seasonal with a French-Nordic fusion), Margo (modern trattoria).
TO SHOP: LIÉ STUDIO

Founded by twin sisters Amalie and Cecilie Moosgaard, Lié Studio channels a distinctly modern minimalism through jewelry that feels both personal and enduring, with pieces designed to “become part of your everyday uniform” rather than momentary statements. At its core, the brand reflects Copenhagen’s dual personality: “There are two kinds of girls in Copenhagen… the minimalistic classic Scandi girl, and then there’s the more playful one you see in street style, a bit more colorful,” said Cecilie during my visit.
Set inside a narrow former barber shop just steps from Tekla, Toteme, and La Cabra in central Indre By, the space mirrors that same minimalist ethos, punctuated by deep warm woods and vintage accents to create an almost meditative atmosphere.

Curved details and a softened material palette move it away from strict Scandinavian austerity toward something more tactile and lived-in, while drawers and objects designed to be handled make the space feel interactive and conversational. “We wanted people to come in, pull out the drawers and have fun with it,” she continued.
Vetted side quests: Louise Roe Gallery (design-forward furniture & homewares), Toteme (peak Scandi style), Jerome & Rosy Vintage (neighboring secondhand curators)
TO SIP: BIRD COCKTAIL BAR

With two locations across the city, Bird cocktail bar offers a more intimate approach to nightlife. As vinyls fill the walls, expect inventive, precisely balanced drinks served in a space that feels relaxed—even when it gets crowded.

We started our night downtown. Cocktails include the tonka bean-infused Tutto Vitto Ditto (pictured), a lemon-passion fruit whisky Jetlag, and a botanical gin martini. The menu offers both low-proof, zero-proof, and full-bodied cocktails depending on your mood. Either way, each drink is expertly crafted, befitting a high-end setting, while the bar’s laid-back atmosphere makes it the perfect place to settle in.
More bar hops: TATA Cocktail Bar (old world made new), Pompette (modern wine bar), Library Bar (cozy and elegant).
TO EXPERIENCE: DESIGNMUSEUM & GLYPTOTEK

© Mico Corvino
A natural starting point for understanding the city’s design legacy, Designmuseum Danmark traces the evolution of Danish and international design through furniture, textiles, and industrial objects. It’s both an archive and an active source of inspiration that offers context into the sensibility you’ll see echoed across the city and anywhere else where Danish design lent a hand.

A more atmospheric counterpart, the Glyptotek pairs classical sculpture with lush indoor gardens and dramatic architecture. There’s a cinematic quality to the space, as light pours through glass ceilings and lush greenery softens a garden variety of marble statues. It’s hard not to slow down and stay awhile.

Got more time? ARKEN (dedicated to contemporary art), Nils Stærk (internationally recognized gallery), Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (modernist haven).
TO UNWIND: ARA’KAI SPA

Courtesy of Ara’kai
Minimal yet deeply restorative, Ara’kai Spa distills relaxation into its purest form. The space carries a near-monastic calm, offset by playful accents and undulating white shelves. On them, a super-curated lineup of beauty brands from the likes of Monastery, DamDam, and Biologique Recherche. It’s the kind of environment that gently resets your pace after days spent moving through the city.

Following a morning pilates session, the Monastery Super Glow Facial felt transportive. The custom treatment draws out the skin’s natural radiance using Monastery’s botanical-rich formulations, including its collaboration with Sofia Coppola (a personal favorite), and felt like the perfect cure for winter conditions. And in true Copenhagen form, Ara’kai also has Ara’kai Pantry, a neighboring cafe and mini grocer that’s just as highly curated as its beauty formulas—don’t forget to grab a green smoothie on the way out.
More relaxation awaits: Sofiebadet (an early 1900’s restored bathhouse equipped with a spa, sauna, and hamam), AIRE Ancient Baths (ultra luxe, candlelit thermal baths), La Banchina (waterfront restaurant, café and wine bar with an on-site sauna).
Special thanks to Wonderful Copenhagen.
