An Afternoon at Spencer’s Spa

Tucked away in the heart of Soho, Spencer’s Spa is a sanctuary centered around quiet recalibration that feels worlds apart from its immediate surroundings.

Located in the hub of Broadway, perhaps the most chaotic stretch of the neighborhood, it operates in quiet contrast—as do many of the artist lofts, curated showrooms, and storied histories that line the streets. Amidst the chaos on the streets below, what remains special about Broadway is often what’s upstairs. As people spill onto the street, moving with the city’s familiar urgency, it’s easy to miss the layered histories sitting just above eye level. Spencer’s lives within that overlooked register—an old, preserved, steady space that feels intentionally held apart from the velocity outside.
On the main floor, I arrived intentionally early, allowing time to ease into the setting. Vintage titles spanning fashion, art, and history were laid across a low marble table, inviting a slow peruse or a quiet moment of reflection. The atmosphere reveals itself gradually, with a faint trace of incense in the air, bronze accents catching light without excess, and antiques grounding the room with a sense of permanence. It resists the hyper-efficient language of modern wellness and instead encourages a more considered pace.

After sipping green tea and flipping through a coffee table book on Robert Mapplethorpe, my name was gently called. From there, my specialist led me through a series of long, billowing white curtains, each step further removing me from the outside world. I opted for the signature massage, a choice that felt less indulgent than necessary after weeks of constant movement—a consequence of traveling, fashion week, and the expected New York City grind.
Shrouded in a minimalist, studio-like space, the full-body treatment unfolded in a light to medium pressure, gradually building in rhythm rather than intensity. It felt less like release and more like reactivation, as if my body was waking from a kind of hibernation. Muscles softened, then responded. There was a quiet precision to it, intuitive without feeling improvised, striking a balance between technical expertise and a more personalized, responsive approach.

Below, the newly added floor is dedicated to facials, extending the same design language while offering a slightly more expansive, light-filled environment. It feels like a natural continuation of the experience, one that unfolds in layers rather than delivering everything at once.

Founded by Ryan McCarthy, Spencer’s exists within a thoughtful middle ground, bridging the gap between the city’s overly utilitarian options and its prohibitively expensive ones. The emphasis is clear: high-quality treatments, design-forward spaces, and an experience that invites everyone to be transported—even if for only a moment.
That’s one of the most resonating takeaways. What lingers is not just the treatment, but the sense of having stepped briefly outside the city’s otherwise hurried pace. Spencer’s does not rely on excess to define itself. Instead, it offers something rarer in New York, a space that invites you to slow down, stay a while, and return.
Spencer’s Spa is open for appointments, offering a considered approach to wellness just above the pace of Broadway. Explore treatments on their website and follow along on Instagram for the latest updates.
