Downtown Manhattan continues to solidify itself as a niche fragrance destination as Seoul-based fragrance label Nonfiction lands on the Lower East Side.

For founder and creative director Haeyoung Cha, New York holds a personal resonance. A former resident, she was drawn to the city’s pace and layered character—something that closely mirrors Seoul, where Nonfiction began. The brand’s new home at 38 Orchard Street reflects that same duality, set within a neighborhood shaped by overlapping histories and communities.

Designed in collaboration with Charlap Hyman & Herrero, the space moves away from traditional retail toward something more atmospheric. Limewashed walls meet glossy oxblood-tiled floors, while a tiled archway reveals an alcove lined with hand-painted black rose motifs by artist Pilar Almon. Among the furnishings, an 18th-century Queen Anne candlestand sits alongside a custom mahogany table by Doug McCollough, bringing past and present into quiet dialogue. Geometric forms—a mirrored column casting amber light and a sharp triangular structure at the entrance—add a bit of edge without disrupting the flow.

The opening marks a long-awaited debut for Nonfiction’s U.S. audience, introducing its full range stateside for the first time. At the core are 22 signature scents, alongside an expanding offering of home, hair, and body products. A New York-exclusive perfume tag, scented with The Rose and finished with the brand’s bespoke motif, leaves a distinctive impression within and beyond the space.
Located at 38 Orchard Street, Nonfiction New York is now open daily from 11 AM to 7 PM. Learn more online and on Instagram.
