Housed within a meticulously restored former women’s prison, Wilmina Hotel is a unique establishment that artfully blends its storied past with elegance. The hotel’s architectural design is a harmonious fusion of industrial chic and refined luxury, where exposed brick walls and soaring ceilings evoke an atmosphere of both nostalgia and innovation. Each room, thoughtfully appointed with bespoke furnishings and state-of-the-art amenities, offers guests a sanctuary that transcends the ordinary, inviting them to indulge in a comforting and exhilarating experience.

Suites boast floor-to-ceiling windows that offer sweeping views of Berlin’s dynamic skyline. With minimalist decor punctuated by luxurious textiles, guests are treated to an oasis where tranquillity reigns supreme amidst the bustling urban landscape outside. Each area within the hotel is thoughtfully curated to foster comfort while simultaneously encouraging a social and relaxed energy amongst guests. From their communal kitchen area situated just beside their lounge to their rooftop terrace and refreshment pool positioned just beside their complimentary sauna, guests are encouraged to indulge and unwind after a day of exploring Berlin’s vibrant culture.

The attention to detail extends beyond aesthetics; their generous list of amenities ensures that every need is anticipated and met with grace. The design philosophy behind Wilmina Hotel is deeply rooted in sustainability and minimalism. This commitment to environmental responsibility positions Wilmina Hotel as a fantastic option for the conscientious traveller.

I was given the Lomo’Instant Square Pigalle to try out whilst on my trip to Berlin. The Pigalle model provides a nostalgic nod to classic instant film, with an emphasis on spontaneity and artistic expression. This camera encourages users to be playful and truly experiment with the art of photography. Every day, I would take my Lomo’Instant out and capture the things that stood out to me. I explored taking a more relaxed approach to photo documentation, which was a refreshing change from my usual approach to medium format. It was a particular joy to take photos of my friends and be able to have tangible imagery to keep as a memento.

As a city that has been shaped by its past, ranging from the Prussian Empire to the Cold War, Berlin offers a space characterised by diversity and creativity. The city’s history is palpable in its architecture, ranging from neoclassical structures to modernist buildings. This juxtaposition of old and new creates an environment ripe for exploration and cultural engagement. Berlin is also home to some of the most well-known art galleries in the world, including C/O Berlin and the Helmut Newton Foundation. I was lucky enough to catch Sam Youkillis’ show “Under the Sun” (at C/O Berlin until May 8th) whilst I was in town.

Vibrant neighbourhoods like Kreuzberg and Prenzlauer Berg showcase a diverse array of shops, bars, and culinary experiences that speak to both local traditions and global influences. I mainly found myself in Kreuzberg, an area marked by a sense of inclusivity and artistic freedom. Street art adorns many buildings, serving as both decoration and social commentary—a testament to the district’s reputation as a canvas for expression. My favorite spots in this area were Cafe Luzia– a very dimly lit bar, ideal for well overdue catch-ups with long-distance friends. Ankerlause for day drinking and people watching by the river. Basmah for the most delicious Sudanese offerings, paired with an opportunity to be well and truly spoilt for choice (this is really my favorite place to eat in all of Berlin).

In those moments at Wilmina—whether sunning on the roof terrace or reading in the courtyard—it became apparent that true relaxation transcends mere absence of activity; it is about finding spaces that nourish both body and soul. Each excursion was punctuated by my return to Wilmina—a reminder that even amidst exploration, one can find serenity. In this unique blend of sanctuary and stimulation, I discovered not just a place to rest but a true home away from home.
